Self-certifications

Since January 1st, 2012, self-certifications represent the only official document to be submitted to public administrations and privates managing public services (universities, municipalities, hospitals). In fact, Public Administrations and managers of public services cannot request or accept documents or certificates already in possession of another public administration.

The most widespread self-certifications are already available for students and graduates of the University of Pavia from their Student Portal (Admissions > Self-declaration):

Diploma Supplement

The Diploma Supplement (DS) is a document supplementing the final qualification and contains the main information about the curriculum attended by the student to obtain the degree, the academic career, the obtained exams and the information on the thesis. It is issued in two languages (Italian and English) and is drawn up according to a model in compliance with the European standards to encourage international mobility by making the value of the qualification itself understandable even abroad.

By virtue of its origins, the DS can be requested for free (it does not require the affixing of any revenue stamp) by sending a Filodiretto at any time by graduates of the 509/99 and 270/04 regulations.

If your qualification belongs to an academic system prior to 509/99 you will not be able to request the DS but you can always proceed with a self-certification or a certificate depending on your need.

Certificates

From January 1st 2012, certificates can only be handed to private individuals or public administrations located abroad and must be issued with revenue stamp (Presidential Decree 642/1972).

Some certificates are exempted from the revenue stamp requirement if issued for the following cases:

How to request certificates

The certificates can be requested remotely via Unipvinforma attaching a copy of an identification document.
Offices will calculate the total amount, including revenue stamps and shipping costs.

Certificate for abroad: legalization

Legalization is a process aimed at validating for foreign countries the signature and the qualification of the public official who has signed and stamped the certificate, making it valid for all purposes in the destination country.

The Hague Convention of 5 October 1961 established a simplified procedure for the legalization of documents intended for use abroad. Documents to be enforced in a foreign country that is a party to the Convention are affixed with a special official attestation, called an apostille, designed to prove the authenticity of the signature and the qualification of the person who signs the document.

However, if the foreign country has not signed the Convention, to obtain legalization it will be necessary to contact the Consulate of the destination country in Italy.
