Independent Students
You can be considered an independent student only if you meet both the following requirements (in accordance with art. 8, comma 2 of DPCM 5 December 2013, n.159):
- Residing outside the family of origin’s housing unit, in a property not owned by a family member. The residence must be documented in official public records and must have been established for at least two years prior to the date of the document submission.
- Earning a gross income of at least 9.000 euros per year, exclusively from subordinate or similar employment, not under a family member. The income must have been declared in the tax return for at least two years preceding the year of enrollment.
If you are an independent student residing abroad with income and properties produced abroad, you must submit via FiloDiretto (Direct Line) all the following documents converted in one PDF file:
- Composition of your family unit, certifying your residence outside the family nucleus;
- Gross income produced in the calendar years 2023 and 2024;
- Real estate properties owned as of 31 December 2024, specifying the relative surface area in square meters, or the absence of properties;
- Amount of movable assets as of 31 December 2024.

If you are an independent student residing in Italy with income and properties produced in Italy, in order to have your “All-inclusive fee” calculated for a.y. 2025/26, you will need to obtain the ISEE Università 2025 by 23rd October 2025. To do so, starting from January 2025, you can:
a) Approach a Tax Assistance Center (CAF), or
b) Access the INPS website and self-declare some data within the precompiled DSU.
- Once you have obtained the ISEE Università 2025, you will need to access your Reserved Area (Secretary > Benefits) between 2nd June and 23rd October 2025 to authorize the University to automatically acquire your ISEE from the INPS database.
- Finally, you must verify in the Reserved Area (Administration > Benefits) that your “All-inclusive fee” bracket has been updated; if not, immediately contact the Tax Office.
If you do not meet the requirements to be considered an independent student, you must either integrate the existing documentation or submit different documents. Specifically:
