ECTS Grading Scale and Tables

The ECTS grading scale and tables facilitate the transfer of academic results (expressed as grades) between different grading systems, enabling the conversion of grades from one country to another according to shared European standards.

In accordance with the ECTS Users’ Guide 2015, the University of Pavia has developed ECTS grade conversion tables for each subject area. These tables are based on the statistical distribution of grades obtained by students enrolled in study programs within each area over the past three academic years.

Within each subject area, the data is further divided by study cycle (bachelor’s degree, master’s degree, and single-cycle master’s degree).

The ECTS grading tables allow grade transfer only between universities in countries within the European Higher Education Area (EHEA) that have adopted the same ECTS scale.

For grade conversion from countries outside the European Higher Education Area, there are no shared tables. However, each partner university of the University of Pavia provides a description of its grading system, which is used for converting grades to the Italian 30-point scale.

Example of ECTS Grade Distribution Calculation

The ECTS grading scale is structured according to the following rule:

  • Grade A corresponds to the top 10% of students' grades.
  • Grade B corresponds to the next 25%.
  • Grade C corresponds to the next 30%.
  • Grade D corresponds to the next 25%.
  • Grade E corresponds to the final 10%.
