Psychological counseling
The University of Pavia offers short term counseling based on best practices in university settings and aims to support students’ mental wellbeing and adjustment. The counseling service provides psychological support in both Italian and English, addressing issues such as anxiety, depression, stress, and other distressing conditions.
The service offers individual sessions, both in-person and online, completely free of charge, conducted by licensed psychologists, ensuring full privacy protection.
Interested students can access the service by following the instructions:
INDIVIDUAL PSYCHOLOGICAL COUNSELING SESSIONS
Students can access the service by following these steps:
- Submit a request through the website (including an intake questionnaire).
- The triage will contact you to schedule the first appointment.
- Up to 6 sessions with the assigned psychologist.
- Completion of the counseling process (including a monitoring questionnaire).
- If necessary, referral to external public or private healthcare services, or to a psychiatrist.
- A follow-up session two months after the end of the counseling (including a follow-up questionnaire).
Thanks to the implementation of the PROBEN project funded by the
Ministry of University and Research- MUR, two new individual specialized
programs are available:
Risk and/or emergency behavior program; Alcohol/substance and/or
behavioral addictions program
- Submit a request through the website: https://serviziopsicologia.unipv.it/ (including
the Entry monitoring survey).
- A triage member will contact you to schedule the first appointment.
- You have to ask for a specialized counseling, specifying which one you would like to
choose
- Up to 10 sessions will be available with the psychological consultant
- Completion of the counseling intervention (including the endline monitoring survey).
- 1 follow-up session two months after the completion of the intervention (including the
follow-up survey).
• Risk and/or emergency behavior program
The program consists of a maximum of 10 sessions, with an additional follow-
up session. It addresses issues encountered by students with at-risk
behaviors (self-harm, stalking, gender violence) and/or emergency behaviors
(suicidality). The psychological counseling program is provided by specialized
professionals, with the goal of:
1. Helping and supporting the user in identifying the problem.
2. Orienting the student in navigating available care options.
• Alcohol/substance and/or behavioral addictions program
The program consists of a maximum of 10 sessions, with an additional follow-
up session. It addresses issues encountered by students experiencing
dependence on psychoactive substances(including alcohol) or behavioral
addictions (e.g., gambling, internet use, etc.). The psychological counseling
program is provided by specialized professionals, with the goal of:
1. Helping and supporting the student in identifying the problem.
2. Orienting the student in navigating available care options.
PSYCHIATRIC CONSULTATION
Referrals to a MD psychiatrist are possible upon specific request and agreement of the psychologist of the service who is conducting the counseling intervention with the student.
For cases involving psychological distress with a diagnosis or psychiatric crisis, or for issues related to substance or behavioral dependence, public services of the Pavia Health Authority are also available:

In emergencies or high-risk behaviors cases, the Emergency Room at the IRCCS San Matteo Hospital is available, or you can call the emergency number 112.
For cases involving at risk behaviours or urgent care, the service also provides guidelines on how to recognize and manage these situations to prevent and mitigate potential negative
outcomes.
